MWV produces Swiss Army Knife packs as brand ditches clamshell

Swiss Army Knife manufacturer Victorinox is replacing plastic clamshell packs with MeadWestvaco's paperboard-based Natralock packaging.

Victorinox said that the new pocket-knife packs were better designed and more environmentally friendly than the previous format. "

President Rick Taggart said: "As a brand that has just celebrated 125 years of iconic design and innovation, were are proud to incorporate more sustainable packaging into our product line with Natralock."

Paperboard-based Natralock is made from paperboard in a PET bubble that MWV said uses 60% less plastic than petroleum-based PVC clamshells.

Victorinox will be using the packaging for the pocket-knife and multi-tool categories in North America and Europe.

Jeff Kellogg, vice president of MWV's Natralock packaging business, said the firm had also provided a design and branding strategy support to help Victorinox target select niche audiences.

"We are able to control the production of our packaging to ensure that the look and feel of the Victorinox Swiss Army products in Europe is consistent with the branding in the US," said Kellogg.
